Vera holds a Licentiate in Biological Sciences from the University of Buenos Aires (UBA). She completed her undergraduate thesis under the supervision of Dr. Agustina Gómez-Laich and Dr. Flavio Quintana on optimizing the use of technology in animal movement studies, and she has published a scientific paper on this subject. She currently works as a CONICET Doctoral Fellow at the Universidad de San Andrés.

Lic. Natacha Gerez

She completed an internship at the Laboratory (2016) in which she was trained in the analysis of the diving behavior of the Magellanic Penguin using specific software, based on information obtained from the use of electronic depth and acceleration loggers. She completed her undergraduate thesis at the National University of Patagonia San Juan Bosco, under the supervision of Dr. Luciana Gallo. The objective of her undergraduate thesis was the assessment of plastic ingestion by the Southern Giant Petrel (Macronectes giganteus). The working methodology included a non-invasive sample collection technique (stomach boluses) and the implementation of standardized protocols for the identification of plastic polymers.

PhD in Biological Sciences from the National University of Mar del Plata. CONICET Adjunct Researcher. Her research focuses on the evolutionary ecology of the association between lice and their amphibious hosts, such as seals and sea lions. In particular, she studies the adaptations that these insects present in order to survive in the marine conditions imposed by their hosts. Dr. Leonardi has more than 10 years of field experience with marine mammals and birds, including an Antarctic summer campaign. Her work has been recognized by her colleagues at the 2014 International Conference on Phthiraptera in Utah, where she was awarded the Robert C. Dalgleish Memorial Award for outstanding young researcher.

PhD in Biological Sciences from the University of Buenos Aires. CONICET Adjunct Researcher. He is part of the Laboratory of Ecology of Marine Top Predators (LEPTOMAR) at IBIOMAR, and a member of its Board of Directors. His research focuses on marine socio-ecological systems, drawing on tools from Movement Ecology, Oceanography, Political Ecology and the Philosophy of Biology. He is a graduate professor of Philosophy of Biology and Socio-Ecological Systems at the National University of Patagonia San Juan Bosco (UNPSJB).

PhD in Science and Technology from the National University of Quilmes. CONICET Postdoctoral Fellow. Her research focuses on the local grounding of the conceptual framework of Socio-Ecological Systems, particularly for the management and research of Protected Coastal Marine Areas of Argentina. She currently studies the management model of the Patagonia Austral Coastal Marine Interjurisdictional Park: its creation, how the protected area is currently conceptualized, who the actors with interests in the place are, how they get involved in the protected area project, etc. This line of work also has a theoretical component through which it seeks to contribute to the debate about how human perspectives are integrated into the conservation of ecosystems.

She is a doctoral student in Natural Sciences at the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Museum of the UNLP. She is completing her doctoral thesis on the functional morphology of living and fossil penguins of Patagonia and Antarctica under the supervision of Dr. Carolina Acosta Hospitaleche and Dr. Flavio Quintana.

Genoveva belongs to the Universidad del Mar (Puerto Ángel Campus), Oaxaca, Mexico, and is currently completing her undergraduate thesis. For the last three years Genoveva has been part of the project on the reproductive biology and at-sea behavior of the Magellanic Penguin at Cabo dos Bahías as a research assistant. Her thesis focuses on the study of the at-sea distribution of the Magellanic Penguin during the chick-rearing period in the Cabo dos Bahías colony.

Micaela completed her undergraduate thesis at the Laboratory (2018-2019). Her work focused on determining the feeding habitat and trophic level of the Pacific green turtle through the study of stable isotopes. Micaela carried out her fieldwork on sea turtle nesting beaches in Guanacaste, Costa Rica.

One of the main methodologies used for the individual marking of birds is the use of rings or metal bands. In the particular case of diving seabirds, although negative effects of the placement of metal bands on the diving performance of penguins have been detected, few studies analyze the effect of the placement of rings on the hind limbs of diving seabirds. Thus, the objective of her undergraduate thesis was to determine whether the placement of rings on the hind limbs of the Imperial Cormorant (Leucocarbo atriceps) has an effect on energy expenditure during diving. To carry out this objective, she analyzed the three-dimensional acceleration data obtained from the placement of electronic behavior data loggers on banded and unbanded animals of the Punta León colony, Chubut, Argentina.
